Role: Enforces mandatory criminal history filters. All initial applicants must complete a comprehensive dual fingerprinted criminal background check—one via the West Virginia State Police and a national check via the FBI. WVSFMO does not process the biometric cards directly; applicants must utilize approved third-party digital networks like IdentoGO and submit the clean results alongside their state packet.

To secure certification, an independent operator must provide a Certificate of Insurance (COI) proving a minimum of $250,000 in General Liability insurance. Role: To qualify for an initial Home Inspector Certification in West Virginia, an individual must be at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma or GED, clear the state/federal background check, and complete a rigid, synchronous training framework:
Live Core Education: Successful completion of a minimum of 80 hours of approved pre-licensing education. (Critical State Nuance: This instruction must be completed via an approved live, in-person classroom or live synchronous interactive webinar. Pre-recorded, asynchronous on-demand online courses are legally rejected for initial qualifying hours.)
Testing: Achieving a passing score on the National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE), administered via the Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors (EBPHI). Candidates coordinate testing seats through designated third-party computer testing centers.
Application: Submission of the complete, signed application packet directly to the WVSFMO in Charleston, containing the 80-hour live certificate, NHIE score sheets, IdentoGO background reports, $250K GL insurance cert, a copy of the WV business license, and a $150 application fee.

West Virginia home inspector certifications operate on an annual renewal cycle, expiring on the last day of the practitioner’s anniversary month. To successfully maintain active, compliant credentials, independent operators must log and submit proof of 16 total hours of approved Continuing Education (CE) every 12 months. (Note: Unlike the initial 80-hour pre-licensing track, the state explicitly allows these ongoing 16 annual CE hours to be completed via self-paced, asynchronous online learning.)
